FAQ

Is popcorn genetically modified?

No. It is important to know that Popcorn is a completely different variety of corn than the standard „dent corn" fed to livestock. It is also different from the sweet corn eaten fresh from the field or in cans. Because the market for popcorn is much smaller than these other types of corn, GMO hybrids have not appeared on the market.

Is popcorn healthy?

Popcorn is a whole grain and thus contains fibre. This from the beginning makes it healthier than many traditional snacks such as chips. Recent research has even shown that the nutritional benefits of popcorn are so beneficial that a portion per day qualifies as one of the five fruits and vegetables most nutritionists recommend should be a part of most peoples' diets.

Researchers at The University of Scranton in Pennsylvania published that one serving of popcorn has up to 300mg of antioxidants - nearly double the 160mg for all fruits per serving. Popcorn was found to have a high level of concentrated antioxidants because it is made up of just four percent water while they are more diluted in fruits and vegetables because they are made up of up to 90 percent water. Adding oil and salt to popcorn of course changes the nutrition.

A problem is with saturated fats. Most microwave popcorn uses palm oil, which is the cheapest oil, but also has a high level of saturated fats, which increase levels of cholesterol in the blood. From 2015, Hopi Popi is able to offer its customers a blend of rapeseed oil, which decreases the amount of saturated fats compared to the product with palm oil.

When I made microwave popcorn, it burned. Why did this happen?

Every microwave oven is different. In some ovens there are so-called "hot spots." This means that there might be one area in your oven that gets extremely hot. The turntable is supposed to prevent the product from spending too much time in the hot spot, but it does not work in all cases.

Microwaves also age. They lose their power output, so the 800 watt oven you bought five years ago might have an actual output of 650. With popcorn, the goal is to get the heat quickly to the level where the popcorn pops. Older microwaves might not be able to have the power to do this.
